Digital Reputation- Your reputation will stay with you wherever you go. If you are kid that seems to get into trouble everywhere they go, people will remember. If you say please and thank you, clean up after yourself, laugh and smile, people will remember. The same goes for what you do and say online, except that once something is in writing, it is VERY difficult to get rid of and...people will remember!

Online Safety- The two words that will get the attention of an adult are "fire" and "stranger". Kids are taught about "stranger danger" at a very young age. If an adult is trying to snatch you, screaming "STRANGER" will get the attention of all adults in the area. Parents worry about online "stranger danger" too. Don't become an internet victim!

Protecting Your Personal Reputation- Kids are told to not give out their address or phone number to people they don't know. The same thing goes for online strangers. People may think that because they play a game with someone, or have instant messaged a person for a while that they know them pretty well. In most cases, kids are communicating with another child, but sometimes it can be an adult trying to get you to give out your personal information so they can find you or even hurt you. Be careful and NEVER give out ANY personal information unless your mom or dad say it is OK to do so. This goes along with online safety.

Social Networking-
Thirteen 13 XIIV 10 + 3 To all of my 4th grade students: That's right, you need to be 13 years old to have a social networking account! |
Online Gaming- Teachers often refer to students as "technology natives". Technology is a part of your world. Cell phones, desktop computers, tablets, laptops, and digital media devices are all relatively new products. Board games and playing outside are taking a back seat to video games and online gaming. Kids need to monitor how much screen time they are involved in. Too much sitting around isn't good for the body or the mind.

Copyright- How would you feel if another student stole your artwork and entered it in the Reflections Contest as their own work? This is basically what copyright is. It is stealing another persons work or ideas and using it as their own work or ideas. Remember that being honest and fair helps to make a good friend.
|
Plagiarism- Teachers will often ask students to retell a story in their own words. This is difficult for many students and many adults. Once a student has read a piece of information, they struggle to find a way to retell that fact in a way other than that of the original author. Would it be fair if another student erased your name on a big report and put their name on it and turned it in? What if they only changed a few sentences? How would it make you feel if you spent hours on a long report and then had someone else only take a few minutes to do their report because they used all of your hard work?

Cyber-bullying- The difference between physical bullying and cyber bullying is that the physical bulling happens when you are near a person, cyber-bullying occurs online or digitally. Both forms of bullying are unacceptable and should be reported immediately to your parents and to your teachers. All types of bullying can be reported to the police and can get you suspended or even expelled from your school, even an elementary aged student! *The YouTube video was produced by the LDS Church. Although it is an amazing video, it does have a couple of minor spiritual references.
